Reconcordia:
A Five-Point Plan for Confessional Lutheran Renewal and Unity
Introduction
The Reconcordia Initiative is an organization founded with the intention of promoting unity among the various confessional Lutheran bodies in the United States. Bodies such as the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS), Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS), and American Association of Lutheran Churches (AALC) share a common confessional heritage yet remain institutionally divided. We believe that a more united confessional Lutheranism would be better positioned to resist the liberalization that has taken hold in certain corners of the faith.
This effort is grounded in a shared commitment to Holy Scripture as the inspired and inerrant Word of God, and to the Lutheran Confessions contained in the Book of Concord as a true and faithful exposition of that Word.
Recognizing both the real theological divisions and the shared confessional heritage among these church bodies, Reconcordia seeks not superficial agreement, but true concord—unity in doctrine, practice, and confession—pursued through patience, clarity, and the building of relationships.
I. Remain Faithful to Confessional Church Bodies
Reconcordia affirms that meaningful renewal must arise from within existing ecclesial structures, such as the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS). Participants are therefore encouraged to remain within their respective synods, instead of departing out of frustration or disillusionment.
We believe that this commitment is not merely institutional, but doctrinal. It is rooted in a shared adherence to the Lutheran Confessions and a desire to strengthen the churches in which we have been placed by God.
II. Cultivate Deep Theological Formation
Lasting unity cannot, and will not exist without theological clarity. Reconcordia therefore emphasizes rigorous study in:
The Holy Scriptures
The Book of Concord
Church history and historical theology
Participants are encouraged to form study groups, academic reading groups, and to help other members produce meaningful and disciplined habits that produce individuals who are:
Doctrinally grounded
Intellectually serious
Capable of articulating and defending the Lutheran faith with patience and humility
III. Foster Cross-Synod Relationships and Trust
Reconcordia prioritizes the cultivation of personal relationships across synodical lines. This point is an integral piece of Reconcordia strategy. Because we recognize that institutional unity cannot precede relational trust, this initiative encourages:
Friendships among laypeople and clergy
Informal gatherings and discussions
Collaborative projects rooted in both the Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions
These efforts aim to reduce suspicion, decrease unrest, increase understanding, and establish a foundation upon which future theological dialogue may be built.
IV. Form Future Pastors and Connect with Current Seminarians
The renewal of unity in our church bodies depends significantly on the formation of faithful and capable clergy. Reconcordia therefore both seeks to encourage young men to pursue pastoral ministry, and looks for those already pursuing theological studies.
Particular emphasis is placed on finding/forming pastors who:
Are deeply immersed in confessional Lutheran theology
Understand the doctrinal positions and concerns of multiple synods
Are currently enrolled in WELS, LCMS, ELS etc. affiliated colleges or seminaries
Are able to engage in thoughtful theological discussion with clarity, conviction, and humility.
At the heart of the Reconcordia Initiative lies the desire to form educational pathways and the cultivation of networks among future church leaders.
V. Commit to a Generational Vision
Reconcordia explicitly rejects short-term or reactionary approaches to unity. Instead, it adopts a long-term perspective, recognizing that meaningful reconciliation, doctrinal clarity, and the renewal of unity will certainly require decades of patient labor.
This includes:
Avoiding premature or forced institutional unity
Encouraging steady theological dialogue
Building a culture of trust, clarity, and shared confession over time
Remaining steadfast to the Initiative, even when obstacles and setbacks are faced
The ultimate goal of this initiative is not merely organizational alignment, but true unity grounded in truth and faith.
Conclusion
Reconcordia is not a movement of compromise, but of conviction. It seeks to address both doctrinal differences and historical realities patiently.
With confidence in the Word of God and a shared confessionally Lutheran foundation, this initiative entrusts its work to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, praying that, in time, greater unity may be realized for the sake of Christ’s Church.
Soli Deo Gloria.
